January features a conversation on incarceration and mental health between two medical doctors who work in this field.
- Dr Ben Danielson is the director of Allies in Healthier Systems for Health & Abundance in Youth (AHSHAY) Center cohoused in UW Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and in Rainier Valley at the Tubman Center for Health & Freedom. AHSHAY works to create a world without harmful youth incarceration and promotes upstream solutions that are centered on the health and well-being of children and youth. Danielson is the Barton Distinguished Endowed Chair for Youth Justice and Health Equity and serves on statewide boards for youth justice and partners with King County to decommission the youth detention center.
- Dr Helen Jack is an Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and core faculty for the UW Consortium for Global Mental Health. Jack practices primary care medicine at a rural state prison in Washington State. Jack's research focuses on using implementation science to strengthen integration of mental health and substance use treatment into primary care in low-resource settings. Jack has been partnering on research in Zimbabwe for many years and is currently conducting a Delphi to study mental health interventions in sub-Saharan Africa.
